Fiesta del Mar

Join us as we celebrate the spirit of ocean conservation through a day-long Latin American cultural festival where we’ll honor the popular television show, Despierta America, for their environmental advocacy. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Activities include special arts and crafts, music and dance performances, and a chance to win a prize at our Fortune Wheel.

New: Behind-the-Scenes Tours

Get an insider’s view of the Aquarium. Each 50-minute tour will give you a chance to interact with our staff, discover the hidden life of animals and learn about our ocean research. Cost is $10 per person plus admission.

White Shark Released to the Wild

The young white shark brought to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on August 27 was tagged and released on September 7. While she was swimming well in the million-gallon Outer Bay exhibit, the shark fed only one time during her stay, and the Aquarium’s animal care staff decided it was best to return her to the ocean.

New Freshwater Otter Pup on Exhibit

“Ziwa,” our newest African spotted-necked otter pup, was born behind-the-scenes in June and is now on exhibit. The 12-week-old female is the fourth freshwater otter pup born at the Aquarium. Her name is the Swahili word for “lake” or “pond,” the natural habitat of her species. Come see her at her new home in Wild About Otters next time you visit.

The Leaping Fish

Combine an eel with a sucker fish and throw in a little superhero spunk and you’ve got a leaping blenny. These small (maximum four inches long), blue-grey fish navigate the rocky intertidal zones of their Indo-Pacific habitats in two ways—swimming in the water and leaping between rocks. They can even breathe air when out of water. It’s rare to see these fish on exhibit in the Western World, so stop by and check them out the next time you visit the Splash Zone exhibit.

The Seafood Watch Sushi Pocket Guide

Sushi lovers will soon have a way to make seafood choices that please the palate and safeguard the world's ocean wildlife. The Seafood Watch Sushi Pocket Guide ranks popular sushi selections based on whether they are prepared using seafood that's caught or farmed in ways that harm the ocean.

Newly Updated 2008 Pocket Guides

Our Seafood Watch pocket guides have been updated to include fish caught in the Great Lakes (the Central U.S. guide), as well as revised recommendations for marlin, sea scallops and Atlantic herring/sardines. Wild-caught salmon from CA and OR has been removed from the West Coast Seafood Guide because the fishery is closed for 2008. Learn more about the update.
